How will this collaboration work?

The selected students for this call will be enrolled in the PhD programme of Materials Engineering at IST, University of Lisbon, Portugal while the research work will be carried out at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, Braga, Portugal.

IST offers Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) programmes of independent, self-directed academic research obtaining skills for Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) of a high specialized level. The Materials Engineering Doctor´s, or PhD, programme complements the basic training in Materials Engineering fundamentals and it offers in-depth knowledge and research capabilities in one or more of the existing scientific areas in the Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering Departments, responsible for the course. The Materials Engineering PhD programme fits within the 3rd cycle of Higher Studies established by Decreto de Lei 74/2006 and its following modifications.

The PhD studies will include the following activities in collaboration with the INL:

1) To enrol and complete the required course work at IST, University of Lisbon;

2) Conduct research in materials science and electron microscopy at INL, Braga;

3) Give oral presentations at national and international conferences;

4) Publish the work in high impact journals.

More information about the research topic:

Prof. Paulo Ferreira research interests focus on the study of the atomic structure, atomic composition and defect behavior of nanomaterials, through in-situ Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, aberration-corrected TEM/STEM, precession microscopy and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). In particular, Prof. Ferreira is interested in understanding the relationships between the atomic structure, composition and the properties of nanomaterials, and the fundamental underlying mechanisms of structural and property changes induced by crystalline defects. The material systems of interest include Li-ion oxides for batteries, proton exchange membranes fuel cells, catalyst nanoparticles and nanoscale particles, wires, thin films and 2D materials.

Supervision:

The work plan will be developed at IST and INL under the scientific guidance of Prof. Paulo Ferreira.
