The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) has an opening for an enthusiastic Polymer Materials/Scientist/Engineer (m/f) with the Materials Science discipline of Corporate R&D, located in Terneuzen (The Netherlands), close to Ghent and Antwerp (Belgium).

Job Responsibilities
 
The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues across multiple functions and businesses to drive the innovation and development of new and sustainable products and technologies, taking a strong role in defining business needs and opportunities and tackling those subsequently.
 
As a Dow Polymer Materials Chemist/Scientist/Engineer, you will:
  • Conduct research into understanding the effect of chemical composition, materials structure, and functionality of materials on their performance in various applications (Coatings, Emulsions, Foams, Home & Personal Care, Packaging…).
  • Devise novel chemistries and formulations targeting desired functionality, morphology, and/or improved sustainability; design protocols to synthesize these chemistries.
  • Prepare materials and specimens, and perform thorough characterization using or adapting existing techniques and methods.
  • Develop new experimental techniques where necessary.
  • Provide original interpretation with fundamental insights to drive the development of structure-process-property relationships.
  • Communicate and leverage research activities through presentations at informal meetings and international conferences, internal reports and peer reviewed publications, and patent disclosures.
  • Develop and manage relationships with external partners (e.g., universities, and institutes) in line with the above research direction.
  • Actively lead in all safety aspects of work in the department and cooperate with EH&S experts to make workflows according to safety standards in industry.

Qualifications

Job Qualifications
 
  • A PhD in Polymer Materials Sciences/Engineering, Physical Chemistry of Polymers, or closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated competence in setting up and conducting materials preparation and/or polymer synthesis.
  • Demonstrated competence in understanding and using material characterization techniques (such as rheology, morphology, surface, thermal, and mechanical properties).
  • Demonstrated competence in providing sound theoretical interpretation. Experience with experimental design and developing process-structure-property relationships is an advantage.
  • Motivation for constant learning and creativity into design of novel materials.
  • Experience with application relevant testing is an advantage,
  • Experience in areas such as packaging, adhesives, foams, coatings, emulsions/dispersions, and/or colloids is an advantage.
  • Track record of research publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals.
 
Soft Skills
 
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in global and diverse cross-functional teams supporting multiple projects at the same time, with minimal guidance.
  • Very good written and oral communication skills. Fluency in English is required.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership in area of expertise.
  • Good organizational and personal effectiveness skills.
  • Safe work, sense of urgency and can-do attitude.
